- In 2008, former Saturday Night Live writer and performer Al Franken narrowly defeated incumbent Norm Coleman for Minnesota's second seat in the U.S. Senate. Coleman triumphed in 2002 when his opponent, popular two-term Minnesota progressive Paul Wellstone, unexpectedly died in a plane crash right before the election.
