American Heart Association

Definition

  • The American Heart Association (AHA) is a voluntary health agency whose mission is “to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.” The AHA has its roots in the Association for the Prevention and Relief of Heart Disease in 1915 in New York City, in order to study the progress of heart disease and whether patients could recover and return to work. Heart associations were founded in other American cities, and the need for a national organization became apparent. [Source: Encyclopedia of Obesity; American Heart Association]
