Americanization
Definition
- Americanization—literally, the process of becoming American—is a cultural phenomenon rather than a legal one, not to be confused with naturalization and the process of becoming a legal citizen of the United States. It represents a conservative social pressure, exerted on individuals or groups who are (or are perceived to be) culturally marginalized, to become integrated into “mainstream” culture, whatever that might be at any given time.
