- ASTRAZENECA IS A large pharmaceutical company created by the merger in 1999 of the Swedish company Astra AB and the British company Zeneca Group PLC. The merger took place to facilitate global reach for the merged companies' products, to enhance complementary research-and-development (R&D) facilities, and to increase financial strength in dealing with a competitive environment in which size and the ability to leverage economies of scope and scale are of great significance.
