- Over the centuries, migration to and from Cuba, beginning with the slave trade to the Americas, has played an important role in its society and in the social construction of race within Cuba. Its proximity to Florida has also meant that the United States is a primary destination for people seeking to leave the island, and departures over the course of the Castro regime have had a significant impact.
