- Guyana has gone from a Dutch and then British colony to a nation that continues to seek political stability and economic growth through socialist policies that include national economic planning and nationalization of major business interests. General Information The Co-operative Republic of Guyana in northeastern South America has a land area of some 215,000 square kilometers and is bounded on the northeast by the Atlantic Ocean, the southeast by Suriname, the south by Brazil, and the northwest by Venezuela.
