- Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the name Jim Thorpe became synonymous with athletic excellence; most sports authorities ranked Thorpe among the world's greatest athletes. Born in the Oklahoma Indian Territory on May 28, 1888, to a half-Irish father and one-quarter-French mother, Thorpe was raised as a member of the Sac and Fox Nation.
