- AMERICAN METEOROLOGIST AND the first director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), Joseph Smagorinsky developed influential methods for predicting weather and climate conditions and lectured at Princeton for many years. With his decision to move the GFDL to Princeton, Smagorinsky made the university a leading center for the study of global warming.Joseph Smagorinsky was born to Nathan Smagorinsky and Dina Azaroff.
