- A civil rights activist and one of the foremost and recognized playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance. Lorraine Vivian Hansberry was born on May 19, 1930, shortly after the climax of the Harlem Renaissance era, which had begun to dwindle after the 1929 stock market crash.
