María Urquides
Definition
- María Legarra Urquides, whose career is discussed in this entry, played a pivotal role in the passage of the federal Bilingual Education Act in 1968. In 1965, Urquides organized an important survey of programs serving Mexican American students in the Southwest, cowrote the report of survey findings, and helped convene a national symposium in Tucson, Arizona, to publicize the report.
