National Youth Survey

Definition

  • One of the weaknesses of past juvenile delinquency research was that it often focused on the youths who were already in the system, those with official records who were easy to access in juvenile halls and state reformatories. These samples were less likely to include middle- and upper-class youths who were often diverted from the system before formal statistics counted them.A solution to the bias evident in early methods was for researchers to use self-report techniques in research and to seek permission to survey general school populations or households.
