- Congolese politician Had he not been assassinated, Patrice Lumumba, first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, might have become one of the most astute national leaders and revolutionaries of the twentieth century. The life of Lumumba sheds light on the history of decolonization in Africa, and Lumumba serves as a symbol of national unity for many Congolese.
