Definition
- Sonia Sotomayor (1954-), an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, assumed office in August 2009, becoming the third female Supreme Court justice and the first of Hispanic descent. Appointed by President Barack Obama, who during the presidential campaign had advocated diversity on the federal bench, Sotomayor replaced Justice David Souter, who had retired in June 2009.
