- Václav Havel (1936–) is politician, playwright, and former dissident. A renowned Czech playwright, Havel was an anti-communist dissident before he served as president of newly democratic Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992 and was elected the first president of the Czech Republic in 1993.
