absolute pitch
Definition
- Absolute pitch (AP), also called “perfect pitch,” is the ability to identify pitches by name (e.g., B-flat)—or to produce pitches when named—without reference to an external standard such as a musical instrument. Pitch identification by AP possessors is typically rapid, effortless, and accurate with respect to pitch class (letter name), although errors may occur in octave placement.
