- Biofuels have been promoted as one alternative to the reliance on fossil fuels for the world's energy needs, but the use of biofuels is controversial. The term biofuel (or agro-fuel) refers to the conversion of agricultural crops into forms of liquid energy that can be blended with or substituted for gasoline and diesel fuel.
