Definition
- Bone mineral density is an estimate of bone mass. Bone mineral density tests, such as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans, can be used to estimate the mineral content of bone, and thus its strength and risk for fracture. [Source: Encyclopedia of Global Health; Bone Mineral Density]
