- The law of the Roman Catholic Church that delineates the regulations and processes of the Church, such as the obligations, rights, and moral duties of Catholic patrons; the structure and hierarchy of the Catholic Church; and the administration of the holy sacraments. The first great compilation was in the 12th century under the Benedictine monk Gratian, who produced the Decretum (or Concordia discordantium canonum of ca.
