Definition
- Child Protective Services (CPS) is a governmental agency under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court that is responsible for investigating allegations of abuse and/or neglect for children under 18 years old. This entry provides a brief history, governing laws, the investigative process, and the goals of CPS. History and Governing Laws The statutory basis for governmental intervention stems from the legal principle of parens patriae, which gives the court the right to act as a parent of a child when the parent is unable or unwilling to do so.
