desi
Definition
- The word desi in various South Asian languages means “native” or “belonging to a country.” For clarity, desi can be contrasted with another word, bideshi or videshi, which means “not native” or foreign. Etymologically, desi is related to the word desh, which means “country” or “land.” Thus, to be desi is to be of a land. [Source: Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Society; Desi]
