Definition
- Disproportionate share hospital (DSH) programs provide additional payments to hospitals with a large number of low-income inpatients. Established in the early 1980s, Medicaid and Medicare DSH payments reached almost $20 billion in 1992, primarily through the growth of Medicaid DSH.
