- A Latin word meaning “I,” which entered the psychology lexicon most pervasively through the work of Sigmund Freud. In his original formulation, ego referred to the conscious, rational mind, which managed the unconscious impulses originating from the biological drives of the id and socially based unconscious mandates of the superego..
