Definition
- Originally a warm ocean current that periodically flows southwards along the coast of Ecuador and northern Peru during the Southern Hemisphere summer when the Southeast trade winds are weak- est. The term is Spanish for ‘Christ Child’, which is associated with its occurrence shortly after Christmas. [Source: Encyclopedia of Environmental Change; El Niño]
