Definition
- Lipodystrophy, or abnormal distribution of body fat including subcutaneous lipoatrophy, which is the loss of fat located under the outermost layer of skin on limbs or the trunk, and fat accumulation in the face, back, or intraabdominal area were observed in some patients and their families in the 1970s. The inherited lipodystrophy was referred to as Kobberling-Dunnigan syndrome or familial lipodystrophy. [Source: Encyclopedia of Obesity; Familial Lipodystrophies]
