Definition
- Infectious disease is any infection or disease caused by certain microbes (called pathogens), such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites (including protozoa and helminths), and atypical proteins known as prions. (Viruses are not considered microbes by strict definition but are included in this discussion.) Infectious disease is determined by the presence of a pathogenic agent and the common symptoms (some are asymptomatic in humans) for the particular microbe.
