- Bernard (Bernie) Madoff orchestrated one of the largest Ponzi schemes ever known. He was a well-respected investor and one of the developers of NASDAQ. His notoriety and his investment firm allowed him to conduct his Ponzi scheme to the tune of $50 billion to $170 billion from investors over a 20-year period.
