- FISSION OCCURS WHEN a neutron hits a large atomic nucleus such as uranium-235 or plutonium239. The nucleus splits into at least two smaller nuclei, releasing energy as well as additional neutrons that go on to hit other nuclei. [Source: Encyclopedia of Cancer and Society; Nuclear Industry]
