Definition
- The world's second leading infectious cause of blindness, onchocerciasis affects 17.7 million people, 99 percent of whom live in Africa. A parasitic disease caused by the filiarial worm, Onchocerca volvulus, onchocerciasis is transmitted from human to human through the bite of infected Simulium black flies.
