Preferred term

overwhelmed mothers

Definition

  • While a number of factors contribute to the psychological well-being of mothers, it has been suggested that the stress they face in their daily lives, such as balancing the demands of motherhood, domestic responsibilities, and their roles as paid workers, can have a critical impact on their ability to cope. However, some researchers and scholars argue that it is not the dual work and family roles that determine whether or not a mother feels overwhelmed, but rather access to and the availability of resources to help cope with the demands of motherhood.Within recent years, maternal coping has become an issue of increasing concern, as it has been reported to influence the overall health and well-being of mothers and children, as well as the quality of maternal-child relationships.
