pediatric obesity
Definition
- Within the past decade, the epidemic of overweight has spread to children and adolescents, threatening to compromise their health and to impose a substantial financial burden on the health care system. Data from the 1999 to 2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) show that 15% of children and adolescents (aged 6–19) are overweight, a 4% increase from the 1988–1994 estimate and a doubling from the early 1970s (Centers for Disease Control, 2003).
