- Film directed by Oliver Stone, 1986 Platoon (1986), a film about the Vietnam War, was directed by Oliver Stone, one of the most controversial, talented, and prolific filmmakers in Hollywood. Since 1986, when Stone achieved national prominence with his movies Salvador and Platoon, he has directed and released a host of films that make pointed and highly controversial statements about American society and recent American history.
