- The concentration of dissolved salts, mainly sodium chloride (NaCl, halite); for example, in water of the ocean, lakes or soil. The value is expressed as parts per thousand (‰, or grams of salt per kilogram of solution) or as parts per million (ppm, or milligrams per litre).
