- Self-consciousness is a personality trait that involves a heightened sense of self-awareness about personal behavior, appearance, or other attributes of the self. An unpleasant feeling of self-consciousness occurs when one envisions being watched or observed by others, resulting in an overconcern about the impression one is making on others.
