self-insurance
Definition
- Self-insurance is the practice of (usually) large companies using their own funds to pay health benefits to employees. Self-insured firms often hire an insurance company as a third-party administrator to process claims and other paperwork, but the company, not the insurer, pays for the cost of medical care for those covered by the plan.
