Preferred term
self-referral
Definition
- A self-referral occurs when a physician refers a patient for services to another health care entity in which the physician or an immediate family member owns financial interest. The referral itself must be for one or more designated health service (DHS), and furthermore must not be an exception to the Stark law (a safe harbor; see entry for Stark Law).
