Preferred term

supremacy clause

Definition

  • The major goal of the Constitutional Convention was to create a stronger national government than existed under the Articles of Confederation. Toward that end, the Supremacy Clause provides that the Constitution, “the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof,” and all treaties “shall be the supreme Law of the Land” (Article VI, section 2).
