Definition
- Technology assessment is a form of policy analysis and evaluation that poses the question “What will be the social, economic, environmental, ethical, and political impacts of the introduction of a new technology?” In this sense, it is an analytic tool that is designed to provide decision makers with scientific information about the potential impacts of technology that might be introduced in the future. A technology assessment consists of three parts: (1) identification of problems, issues, and applicable technologies; (2) identification of relevant effects and impacts; and (3) development and evaluation/assessment of policy and decision alternatives.
