Definition
- After Tatiana Tarasoff was killed by a jilted suitor who disclosed his intentions in treatment prior to killing her, the California Supreme Court concluded that the psychologist and supervising psychiatrist should have warned her of the pending danger and were compelled to protect her. They were found liable for not doing so (Tarasoff v. Regents of University of California, 1976). [Source: Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention; Threat Assessment]
