- Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster commenting before the 2002 Senate races, claimed that “ever since Sept. 11, we've noticed that a military background—particularly combat experience—is one of the most prominent positives for candidates,” whereas “in the past, it was not a significantly positive factor.” It is premature to assess Ayres's statement about a shift in the importance of military background post-September 11.
