African politics and society
Definition
- Throughout this entry, Africa refers to sub-Saharan Africa, the region south of the Saharan Desert that is bounded in the north and west by Mauritania; in the east by Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia; and in the south by the Republic of South Africa. The contemporary political history of Africa is marked by imperialism, the expulsion of foreign powers and settler elites, and the postindependence travails of its roughly fifty states.
