- On February 4, 1999, Amadou Bialo Diallo was shot and killed at the doorstep of his apartment building in the Bronx by four New York Police Department (NYPD) officers. The shooting of the innocent, unarmed, 23-year-old African street vendor with no criminal record, and the acquittal of the four white police officers involved, became the focus of controversy and protests, as well as becoming part of the history of and debate about racism in the New York criminal justice system.
