Bay of Pigs

Definition

  • The failed attempt to overthrow the Cuban regime of Fidel Castro in April 1961 by landing 1,400 Cuban exiles at the Bay of Pigs had consequences that reached far beyond the deaths of 140 of the rebels and the capture of more than 1,000 others. With Washington's involvement in the operation obvious to all, the debacle weakened President John F. Kennedy right before his crucial first meeting with Soviet General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev at the Vienna summit. [Source: Encyclopedia of Leadership; Bay of Pigs]
