  • Bernard de Mandeville was an influential eighteenth-century political economist, social theorist, and satirist. Born in the Netherlands to a family of physicians, Mandeville attended the Erasmian school in Rotterdam and, in 1685, matriculated at the University of Leiden to study medicine.
