Black Arts movement
Definition
- Literary movement (circa 1965–1975) closely allied with the Black Power movement that sought unity between black cultural expression and political activism, emphasizing the unique experience of people of African descent throughout the world. The Black Arts movement centered on the idea that African American literary artists must define themselves and their art in “black” terms to create a “black aesthetic” independent of white society and culture.
