- CD-R, CD-ROM, and DVD are all acronyms for types of digital optical recording media: CD-R stands for Compact Disc Recordable, CD-ROM is short for Compact Disc Read Only Memory, and DVD is the abbreviation for Digital Versatile (or Video) Disc.
