- MUCH CURRENT KNOWLEDGE of cancer treatment, regarding its efficacy, dosage requirements, safety, side effects, and longevity, comes from clinical trials on human subjects. To maintain a high standard of ethics and protocols among clinical trials in the United States, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) manages a Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis.
