- LOCATED IN COLD Spring Harbor, New York, on Long Island, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is a private, nonprofit institution focusing on research areas in cancer, neuroscience, plant genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics, as well as providing a wide array of education opportunities such as research meetings, courses, and the newly established Watson School of Biological Sciences that awards Ph.D. degrees. CSHL was founded in 1890 by the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences as the new Biological Laboratory for providing marine biology training for high school and college teachers; the first course (the General Course on Biology) started in the same year.
