  • Fred McFeely Rogers was born March 20, 1928, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, 40 miles east of Pittsburgh. The son of wealthy and devout Presbyterian parents, he earned his bachelor's degree in music from Rollins College (Winter Park, Florida, 1951) and was hired by NBC television in New York to assistant produce The Voice of Firestone and, later, floor direct The Lucky Strike Hit Parade, The Kate Smith Hour, and the NBC Opera Theatre.
