Geier v. Sundquist
Definition
- Geier v. Sundquist (2001) set into motion a series of lawsuits beginning in 1968 and ending in 2004 that culminated in the desegregation of the public education system in Tennessee. As a result of the Geier lawsuits, in 1979 the court ordered the once White-only University of Tennessee (UT) to merge with the nearby all-Black Tennessee State University (TSU).
