Concept information
Preferred term
HIV testing, counseling, and referrals
Definition
- Many adolescents who engage in risky sexual behavior are putting themselves at risk for serious health problems including infection with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Contracting HIV can interrupt a student's academic progress; cause tremendous disruption to the student, the student's family, and the school; and perhaps even alter the student's entire life course. Despite the risk, very few adolescents who have HIV have access to health services. [Source: Encyclopedia of School Health; HIV Testing, Counseling, and Referrals]
